The three Lyman County communities of Presho, Kennebec and Reliance have scheduled citywide clean up days this spring. While the events are usually held, this year brings added importance.

Hundreds of people will return to their hometowns this summer as the towns of Presho, Kennebec, and Reliance all celebrate their centennials. Community organizations and city government have taken the lead and designated a day to clean up.

Presho Clean up May 7th
Volunteers from the Presho Area Chamber will help Presho residents remove trash from their property on Saturday May 7th starting at 1 pm. In conjunction with "Join Hands Day" community volunteers of all ages are encouraged to assist in the clean up. Residents unable to move their trash including tree branches, white goods, or other rubble to the curb may call the Presho Area Chamber office for assistance. Volunteers will be around town to pick up and haul trash to the rubble site, which the City of Presho has agreed to have open at no additional charge. Remember there is a charge to remove Freon from appliances. Call the chamber office at 895-9445.

Kennebec Clean up Saturday May 7th

The Kennebec Town board has designated May 7th as Clean-Up Kennebec Day. The rubble site hours will be open from 1 to 6 pm. Normal rubble site fees will be waived on that day. However, residents are reminded that only allowable items will be accepted. If you have any questions call Pam at the city finance office at 869-2263. In case of inclement weather, the rain date is May 14.

Reliance Clean Up May 14th

The community of Reliance has set Saturday May 14 as the official citywide clean up day. Volunteers are invited to take part in helping to clean up their town for the upcoming summer celebration. Bring your work gloves and community spirit to the Town Hall at 10 am to get started. Contact Mayor Red McManus if you have any questions concerning the clean up day. Everyone is welcome to help.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office located in Kennebec is under the direction of District Conservationist Shane Reis effective April 4th.

Reis, a graduate of SDSU, was employed with the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts (SDACD) as a Resource Management Specialist for the past two years. He worked primarily in conservation offices in Kennebec, Pierre, Philip and Kadoka.

Reis will spend the next year in training, which may require traveling to other NRCS offices around the state. Im excited about the new position and look forward to the challenge ahead of me, stated Reis.
A life long resident of Lyman County, Reis grew up on a ranch south of Oacoma and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1998. Since I grew up in the eastern part of the county, Im not as familiar with the people further west, added Reis. The DC of a NRCS office provides technical assistance and administers financial assistance to landowners through conservation plans and cost share programs.
