Rain recorded throughout much of county

Rain is the big news this week around the county. The question being asked by most is how much?

The rain started early Wednesday morning and fell on and off through Thursday night. While areas around the county may have received varying amounts, nearly everyone received some moisture.
Charles Bowar, National Weather Observer at Kennebec officially recorded 3.30 inches of rain in Kennebec.

Frank Leichtnam, weather observer from north of Presho, recorded 2.70 inches. The National Weather Service reports that Vivian had 3 inches, Reliance, 2 inches, Winner, 2 inches, and Chamberlain, 1.68 inches.

Thursday night water was running over gravel roads in many areas around the county. Medicine Creek was running bank-to-bank full Friday morning. Water was sitting in most low spots, a sight not seen around the county in some time.

Bill Lengkeek, Lyman Co. Highway superintendent, reports no significant damage to country roads due to flash flooding. Roads need to be bladed, especially those that had water running over them, Lengkeek reported Monday morning upon inspecting roads in the area.

According to the National Weather Service the past winter was one of the brownest winters on record for parts of central and north-central South Dakota. Kennebec had the ninth driest winter with just 22 inches, compared to an average of 33 inches.
