A major winter storm carrying a mix of rain and snow hit the Lyman County area and much of northwestern South Dakota Sunday bringing some much needed moisture to the area.

Rain started Sunday afternoon and continued through the night, changing over into snow in much of northwestern Lyman County. Eastern Lyman County experienced mostly rain with just a trace of snow. The area north of I-90 and the western part of the county had around 6 inches of snow or more. Strong winds created blowing and drifting snow which resulted in hazardous travel much of Sunday and Monday. Numerous accidents were reported by the Lyman County Sheriff's office.

According to Charles Bowar, National Weather Observer, Kennebec recorded .89 hundredths of rain Monday morning.

School was called off Monday and had an hour late start on Tuesday morning to allow extra traveling time.
