Doris Burns, 80 Funeral Service for Doris Burns, who died on August 25,2010 at Golden Living Center Prairie Hills in Rapid City, were held on Monday August 30, 2010 at the Vivian Lutheran Church with a burial at Masonic Cemetery in Phillip,SD. Doris was born on April 16, 1930 in Phillip to Artie May and Soren Sorensen. She lived in Phillip and graduated from Phillip High School in 1948. She received her teaching certificate from Black Hills Teachers College and taught in the Phillip area. In 1949 Doris married Robert Burns and they moved to Vivian in 1950 where they raised three children. She is survived by her three children: Jim (Carol) Burns of Black Hawk, SD, Deb (Dave) Wendt of Sultan, WA and Cindy (Paul) Trudeau of Kihei, HI; one sister Tish (Delbert) Gustafson of Faith, SD; three grandchildren: Ressie and Robert Trudeau and Chelsea Wendt; two step-grandchildren: Dean and Carl Relf and five step-great-grandchildren: Leslie, Tyler, Machalla, Zach, Dean Jr. and Mariah. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her parents; two brothers: Eldon Wadell and Morris Sorensen; one sister Eleanor Edwards and step-grandson Zack Relf. Roda Mae Sweeney, 78 A funeral mass for Roda Mae Sweeney, who died on August 28, 2010, was held Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford with burial at St. John Catholic Cemetery, rural Beresford. Roda Mae Sweeney was born October 21, 1931 in Kennebec, SD to parents Cliff and Bertha (Olsen) Halverson. She died August 28, 2010 due to cancer at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 7 days. Roda attended Kennebec schools and graduated in 1949. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD for two years and received her teaching certificate. She later attended the University of South Dakota and received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1975. Roda taught school in Winner, Presho, and Beresford. She then taught at Woodfield Center from 1969 to 1996. She also owned and operated Marty’s Café in Beresford. Roda married William Sweeney on November 22, 1951. They resided in Presho until moving to Beresford in 1960. Roda was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church. She loved teaching, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with family and friends. Her survivors include her two sons, Duane (Leila) Sweeney of Manassas, VA and Jim Sweeney of Beresford; daughter Jane (Jeff) Norling of Beresford; daughter-in-law Shelley Sweeney of Sioux City, IA; eight grandchildren, Tiffany Gray and Ryan Sweeney, Manassas, VA, Luke Sweeney, Sioux City, IA, Ted (Molly) Norling, Beresford, Tom Norling, Beresford, Katie Norling, Rochester, MN, Tracia (Austin) Hansen, Beresford, and Keaton Sweeney, Beresford; 5 great granddaughters, Taylor, Jadyn, Grace, Ava and Layla; three sisters, Jean (Marlow) Ohman, Sioux City, IA, Jan (Dick) Lien, Kennebec, and Carol (LaVerne) Ehlers, Presho; brother Cliff (Pat) Halverson, Kennebec; brother-in-law Paul Reuman, Presho, SD and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Arthur Arnold Peterson, 57, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at his home. Survivors include his wife, Becky Rose, Rapid City; four daughters, Jennifer Alberts, Mesa, Ariz., Jaime Peterson, Sioux Falls, Melanie Hultman, Newport News, Va., and Danielle Peterson, Rapid City; two sons, Timothy Rose and Loren Rose, both of Rapid City; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; his mother, Catherine Peterson, Kennebec; three brothers, Calvin Peterson, Newton, Ga., Leland Peterson, Kennebec, and Kent Peterson, Reliance; and two sisters, Teresa Hamer, Kennebec and Ronda Wagner, Chamberlain.
Memorial services were held Saturday Aug. 21 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Baum officiating. Another memorial service was held at the Reliance Medthodist Church on Monday, August 23 followed by internment at the Reliance Cemetry. Mary Lou Lintvedt, 76
Funeral services for Mary Lou Lintvedt, who died on August 18, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, were held on Saturday August 21, 2010 at the Vivian Auditorium with a burial at Vivian Cemetery. Mary Lou was born on February 2, 1934 in Presho, SD to Lowell and Myrtle Moore. She grew up on a farm 26 miles south of Vivian on the White River. She attended Country School north of Kennebec until 1942 when she moved with her family to a farm south of Vivian and attended Country School there before graduating from Vivian High School in 1952. Mary Lou was united in marriage to Darrel Lintvedt on October 15, 1952 at the Vivian Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born. They spent their life farming and raising their children. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, dancing, the Minnesota Twins but especially spending time with her grandkids. She is survived by her husband Darrel; her five children: Brian (Michelle) of Presho, Laurie (Monte) Lucas of Rapid City, Todd (Julie) of Independence, MN, Mark of Presho and Darla (Phil) Jorgenson of Overland Park, KS; Dawn Lintvedt of Presho; two brothers: Dave (Janice) Moore and Terry (Kay) Moore; sister Margaret (Ronald) Juhnke; sister-in-law Bernice Moore; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Jack Moore and grandson Ryan Lintvedt.
Joseph K. Burull, 94
Joseph K Burull passed away on August 5, 2010 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 94 years. Funeral services for Joseph K. Burull, 94, of Chamberlain were Monday, August 9, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Joseph Kenneth Burull was born February 22, 1916 to Olaf and Caroline (Sletto) Burull on the family farm southwest of Reliance on the White River. He was baptized in the Vivian Lutheran Church. He attended the Bellwood County School and graduate from the eighth grade. From 1936 to 1939, Joe worked at a Phillips 66 gas station in Kennebec, SD for Shorty Swanson. In 1940, he moved to San Diego, CA to work at a B-24 bomber factory. In 1943, he returned to his parent’s farm and worked in partnership with his father. On September 23, 1947, Joe was united in marriage to Leola Mae Goetsch in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain. To this union six children were born, Sharon, Jeanette, Vicky, Quinten, Shirley, and Carolyn. Together, they lived on the White River 14 miles south of Reliance. They lived with Joe’s parents for a few years until they could get their house ready to live in. From 1967 until 1979, Joe and son Quinten farmed and raised cattle and milked cows. They remained on the farm until 2005 when they moved into Chamberlain. Joe and Leola were blessed with a marriage of 61 years along with 61 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joe is survived by a son Quinten Burull and wife Brenda of Chamberlain; four daughters Sharon Ellis and husband LeRoy of Reliance, SD, Jeanette Burull of Chamberlain, SD, Vicky Clites and husband Mike of Brookings, SD, and Susie Day and husband Jack of Conroe, TX; 21 grandchildren; and 40 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife Leola; daughter Shirley; parents; sister Irene; and three brothers Obert, Clifford, and Marvin.
Edgar C. Hall Jr., 89
Edgar “Ed” C. Hall Jr., of Pinehurst Road, Asheville, NC died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at his home. Edgar’s family will honor him with a family memorial walk the last week in August. Edgar was born, May 3, 1921 at Mitchell, SD to the late SD Senator Edgar Chamberlain Hall and Emma Chadwick Tripp. Edgar and his wife, Norma, of 61 years resided in Asheville, NC since 1981. He was a veteran of WWII, having served as an Aviation Cadet with the Army Air Corps. Prior to his army service Edgar graduated from Southern State College, Springfield, SD and taught school in Lyman Co., SD. After discharge from the Army, he attended and graduated from South Dakota State University at Brookings, SD. Edgar continued to serve his country as a Human Resource Officer with the Department of Army at Black Hills Ordnance Depot, Igloo, SD; Hq USAEUR, Heidelberg, Germany; US Army General Depot, Ingrades, France; Anniston Army Depot, Anniston, AL; Electronic Command, Red Bank, NJ; Hq 8th US Army, Seoul, Korea and Fort Richardson, Anchorage, AK. Edgar retired from the Department of Army at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, AK in 1981. In retirement he served as Secretary/Treasurer to an International tape recording club and volunteered at the Mediation Center in Asheville. Mourning his passing is his wife, Norma (Fey) Hall; two daughters, Susan K Hall-Martin (George), Spearfish, SD and Linda L Hall of Asheville; one brother, William Hall (Louise) of Moose Lake, MN; two grandchildren, Molly E Hall-Martin of Chapel Hill, and Jordan R Hall-Martin (Kati Travasti) of Asheville. Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Helen and Beatrice and a brother, John Francis Hall.

Sarah Vehle died Wednesday August 4, 2010 at Lakeside Village in Omaha. Funeral services for Sarah Vehle, 94, of Chamberlain, SD were held Monday August 9, 2010 at the United Church of Christ, Chamberlain with burial at Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain. Sarah Vehle was born January 15, 1916 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to John Bunyan Weaver and Martha (Eason) Weaver and was the 7th of 8 children. She graduated from Edgecombe High School in Pinetops, NC in 1933, and attended Norfolk Business School, Norfolk, VA before moving to Greenville NC in 1934 to work for Goodson and Flanagan Insurance Agency for 10 years. In 1944, she married Abner “Ab” Vehle, of Twin Valley, MN in Greenville SC. After his return from wartime service in Europe they moved to Winner SD where she worked for the Harold Volz Insurance Agency. In 1948 they moved to Reliance, SD where he managed the Shanard Grain Elevator, and in 1958 they moved to their permanent home in Chamberlain. She was baptized in Reliance in 1949 and later joined the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain. Survivors include one sister in law Dorothy Sharrett of Virginia Beach VA; two sons Michael of Mitchell, SD and Dan, and his wife Lisa, of Omaha, NE; two granddaughters, Sarah and Dana of Omaha, NE, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Carl Dwight Weaver, Richard Earl Weaver, Ruby Gordon (Hammond), Mary Irena (Wilkinson), John Raymond Weaver, Margaret Elizabeth (Jones), and Dorothy Susan (Simmerson).
Harold Joseph Kortum, 79 Harold Joseph Kortum, age 79, of Custer, SD, passed away suddenly Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City. Memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church in Custer, with Pastor Tom Opoien officiating. Harold was born August 18, 1930, to Herman and Margaret (Terca) Kortum in Presho, SD, on the family farm. He graduated from Presho High School. He joined the US Marines and served in the Korean War. In 1953, he married Jean Hohbach (Plankinton,SD), and farmed the Kortum family farm in Lyman County for many years. In 1975, he married Susan LaFurge (Pierre, SD), and together they moved to Custer, SD, in 1978. He retired in 2008 after serving as SD State Electric Inspector for 30 years in the Black Hills area and western SD. Harold is survived by his wife, Susan of Custer; son, Douglas (Tammy) Kortum of Ft. Pierre, SD; daughters, Cynthia (Dan) Clark of Winner, SD; Denise (Steve) Winckler of Anderson, TX; Pamela Guidry of Pearland, TX; brother, Zane Kortum of Alexandria, VA; sisters, Twila (Howard) Fitzpatrick of Cawker City, KS; Betty Fernandez of Yucaipa, CA; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Margaret (Terca) Kortum.
Rev. Kenneth L Hairgrove, 79 Reverend Kenneth L Hairgrove, 79, Rapid City, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Hospice House in Rapid City. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, July 28, at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont. Kenneth was born July 2, 1931, to Ethel and Dee Hairgrove in Spur, Texas. He served in the armed forces during the Korean War. He was discharged on the Fourth of July, 1952, and loved to claim all of the flags were flown for his independence. Kenneth and Zona Mabel Donley were married October 24, 1953. They lived in Abilene, Texas, while Kenneth finished his BA degree at McMurry College. Kenneth received his Masters of Divinity degree from Iliff Seminary in 1962. He served the United Methodist Church in Woodson, TX; Lubbock, TX; Ovid, CO; Presho, Wall, Howard, Belle Fourche and Knollwood Heights U.M.C. in Rapid City and Gettysburg, SD. Kenneth retired in 1994. After retirement he realized his passion for painting and shared his gift with many. Kenneth loved spending time with his family; wife, Zona; children, Stephen and wife Cheryl; David and wife Jeannie; Philip and wife Heather; Zona Ruth Hairgrove, and Mary Beth Nielsen. He was very proud of his grandchildren; Stephanie, Kenna, Valerie, Jessica, Amanda, Brian, Iris, Tassia, Cloye, Zona Grace, and Maggie. He is also survived by two brothers; Roland and Mike and a sister, Shirly Steinfath. He was preceded in death by his brother, Van.
Elnora Hulce, 84 Elnora Hulce, 84 of Presho died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the New Life Boarding Home in Presho. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27 at the Presho United Methodist Church with burial at the Vivian Cemetery. Elnora was born 10 miles northwest of Vivian on the Jones/Lyman County line on August 16, 1925 to Jenny and Joseph Hansler. When she was about 2 they moved to the Oswald Mauch farm. About the time she started school they moved to the Boal place in Vivian now occupied by Gail Booth. In 1942 they moved to the home place in Vivian where the family lived until their death. She attended summer school at Dakota Wesleyan in 1944. Elnora married Forrest Hulce on August 16, 1944 at Presho. They lived in Vivian for a short time they then moved to the Andrew Brakke ranch south of Presho. They lived there until 1985 when they moved in to Presho with Forrest commuting back and forth to the ranch. In November of 2006 she moved to New Life Boarding home where she resided until her death. In 1949 LaDonna and George Breen came to live with the Hansler family in Vivian, Elnora considered them as close as a brother and sister. Elnora and Forrest had two daughters: Dianne and Darlene. Elnora taught school for one year when she was first married. In 1946 she began as a cook for Frontier Cafe in Presho. In 1967 she moved with the business to Hutch’s where she cooked until 1984. Elnora loved music, she learned to play the guitar from her older brother Roy when they were in school. Later in life she learned to play the Mandolin. Elnora along with two other friends formed a small band called the “Groovy Grannies” Elnora was a member of the Methodist Church, Methodist Ladies Aid, Liberty Extension Club and a 4-H leader for several years. She is survived by her daughters: Dianne (Shorty) Marshall of Draper and Darlene (Lonnie) Leichtnam of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers; two sisters and two great-great-grandchildren.
John Brickman, 89 John Brickman, 89, Winner, SD, passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 12, 2010 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 24, at Christ Lutheran Church in Winner. Burial was at the Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery in rural Carter, SD. John was born to German immigrants from Odessa, Russia. Christian and Katherine (Walters) Brickman arrived at Ellis Island, NY in 1909. The small family moved west, working as farmers, living in the Mitchell, Presho, and Witten areas during which time they became U.S. citizens. John was born May 27, 1921 south of O’Kreek, SD. At the age of six the family moved south of Carter and eventually to the farm that John called home. John attended Longview Grade School. He was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in 1935 at the Jerusalem Lutheran Church. John continued to be a faithful member until his death. In 1940 when John was 19 his father passed away leaving him responsible for the farm, his mother and small sister. On November 18, 1944 John and Dorothy Mann were united in marriage at Clearfield, SD and to this union three children were born. They remained on the farm for 52 years and in 1996 retired and moved to Winner. John enjoyed farming and raising livestock, planting a garden and working in his yard. He enjoyed watching the Twins play baseball and visits from the grandkids. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Dorothy of 66 years, their children: Richard (Jeanne) Brickman, Winner, SD; Diane (Roger) Studt, Presho, SD; and Karen (John) Cook, Pine Haven, WY, a sister Emma Smit, Yankton, SD, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rose Brodrecht, 93 Funeral services for Rose (Hemesath) Brodrecht, 93 years old, will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 21 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Pastor Gary Oreshoski officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30-7:00 pm Tuesday at the Church with a Rosary at 7:00. Burial will be in the Holy Angels Catholic cemetery in Presho.
Rose passed away on Sunday, July 18th in Sioux Falls.
Rose was born in Ossian, Iowa on March 13, 1917 to Frank and Emilia (Imoehl) Hemesath. At age 2 Rose moved to their farm NW of Presho with her family. She lived in Presho the remainder of her life until her health required her to move to Sioux Falls.
On January 31, 1950 Rose was united in marriage to Raymond Brodrecht. They lived on the family farm north of Presho. To this union four children were born: Mary, John, Donna and Linda.
Rose was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and their altar society. She enjoyed participating in Senior Citizens activities. She also enjoyed playing cards and quilting.
Survivors include her children: Mary (Dick) Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD; John (Jeanne) Brodrecht, Casper, WY; Donna Faris, Mason, OH; 7 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Raymond, daughter, Linda, step-son, Francis, son-in-law, Earl, her parents, 5 brothers, 5 sisters.
Linda Brodrecht, 54 Funeral services for Linda Brodrecht, 54 years old, will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 21 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Pastor Gary Oreshoski officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30-7:00 pm Tuesday at the Church with a Rosary at 7:00. Burial will be in the Holy Angels Catholic cemetery in Presho. Linda passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 18th in Sioux Falls.
Linda was born in Pierre, SD on February 9, 1956 to Raymond and Rose (Hemesath) Brodrecht. She lived her life on the family farm north of Presho.
Linda was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She loved going to Lyman High basketball and football games. She enjoyed participating in Senior Citizens activities. She also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her great nieces and nephews.
Survivors include her 2 sisters, Mary (Dick) Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD; and Donna Faris, Mason, OH and 1 brother, John (Jeanne) Brodrecht, Casper, WY; 7 nieces and nephews and 14 great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Raymond and Rose, half-brother, Francis, and brother-in-law, Earl.

Alfred F. Schelske, 92 Funeral services for Alfred F. Schelske, 92, of Reliance, SD were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Reliance Cemetery at Reliance.
Alfred passed away on July 10, 2010 at Sanford Mid Dakota Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 92.
Alfred Frederick Schelske was born January 13, 1918 to Ed and Mary (Ott) Schelske. He attended school at Roosevelt country school southwest of Reliance. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member.
In 1941 and 1942 he worked at Douglas Aircraft in San Diego, CA. He returned home to farm with his father and later bought the Schelske Homestead.
On September 22, 1945 Alfred was united in marriage to Edna Wagaman. They made their home on the ranch where they raised Registered Hereford Cattle. They attended many Hereford shows and sales. Alfred took great pride in his cattle and his wheat fields.
Alfred was one of the Director’s of the Big Bend Hereford Association. In 1986, he was named Lyman County Rangeman of the Year. He served on the Bailey Township Board and also served as Secretary and Trustee of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance for many years.
Gratefully sharing in his life are his wife Edna of Reliance; five daughters Jeanie Wolcott and Lenny of Reliance, Kathy Randall and Bill of Chamberlain, Nancy Larsen and Steve of Kimball, Debbie Volmer and Ron of Presho, Laurie Michels and Steve of Fountain Hills, AZ; a sister Violet Burull-Borr of Riverside, CA; 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and siblings Adolph, Elmer, Bob Schelske, Elsie Smith, Betty Felback, Maletha Williams, Mary Jensen and an infant brother.
Gwen Meinen, 68 Funeral services for Gwen Meinen, 68, of Iona, will be held on Tuesday, July 13 at the United Methodist Church in Gregory. Burial will follow at the Iona Cemetery.
Gwen died on July 7, 2010, at the age of 68 years.
Gwendolyn Doris Svoboda Meinen was born July 22, 1941 the fourth of six children born to the family of Joe and Theresa (Dite) Svoboda.
When she was 8 years old her mother died and Gwendolyn had to make a childhood adjustment to a new way of life. She attended the South Bijou School near their Hamill home through the 8th grade and then began helping her father and step mother Elsie on the farm.
Gwen was married to Everett Meinen on November 26, 1960 in Gregory, SD. To this union two boys were born: David in 1961 and Dean in 1966. They made their home on a farm near Iona for their entire lives.
Everett died September 11, 1982 and Gwen continued to operate the farm with the help of their two sons.
Gwen enjoyed doing needlework, crocheting, working puzzles and was very active in the Burke VFW Auxiliary. She served as vice-president of the Hamill ZCBJ Lodge, and enjoyed every minute of helping remodel the Iona Community Center.
She is survived by her two sons: David and Dean (Amy) of Iona, SD; a granddaughter, Caylee Meinen of Iona; and one brother Vincent (Linda) of Iona; three step-brothers: Don (Dorothy) Christensen, Melvin (Carol) Christensen and Marvin (Jan) Christensen, and a step-sister Joan (Lester) Songer, and by nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Elsie, her husband Everett, one brother Franklin, and three sisters: Marilyn, Eleanor and Baby Joan and a step-brother Robert Christensen.
May (Mickey) Fitzpatrick Opp, 77 Funeral services for May (Mickey) Fitzpatrick Opp were held at the Laughlin Service Funeral Home with Pastor Hughey Reynolds officiating. Burial was in the Huntsville Memory Garden.
Mickey, 77, passed away Saturday, June 26, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Mickey was born and grew up in Kennebec, SD where she attended school. She also worked there until moving to various Army locations where her husband was stationed during the Korean War.
She enjoyed a successful career as a china painter and teacher. She was active in the local China Painters Guild and a member of the China Painters Teachers Organization. Survivors include her husband of 59 years Howard Opp; daughter Lynn (Eddie) Taylor; sons: Lon (Debbie) Opp, Madison, Alabama, Kelton Opp, Houston, Texas, Kevin Opp, Madisonville, Kentucky, Sister Lillian Disharoon, Huntington Beach, California, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one step grandchild.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Joe and Mary Fitzpatrick.

Kathryn Cole, 96 Kathryn Mariella Cole, 96, Winner, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at First Baptist Church, Winner. She was born on Nov. 6, 1913, in Delmont to Lewis Park and Ruby Maude (Jenney) Comp.
She grew up in Delmont, Plankinton and Presho. She attended Southern State College, Springfield, to earn her teaching certificate. She taught school in Delmont for several years and also taught in various country schools in the Presho area and at the Juhnke School south of Vivian. She spent a year studying at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago.
On June 9, 1946, she married Ralph Cole in Presho. They lived on a farm north of Witten, where she remained until 2007, when she moved into Elder Inn Assisted Living in Winner.
She was a member of Witten and Winner Baptist churches, where she served as Bible and Sunday school teacher, deaconess and in various leadership roles of the Women’s Mission Society Circle.
She is survived by her children: Jessie Elsasser and husband Jim, Witten; Kenneth and wife Becky, Lincoln, Neb.; and Marilyn Ebert, Washta, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a brother, Perry Comp and wife Patty; a sister, Marie Gregory; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Frank and Eula Cole, Kathryn Cole, and Burdine Cole; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters: Arlene Goddard and Grace McEachran; and a brother, Corwin Comp.

John Luurs, 85 Funeral services for John Luurs, 85, of Pukwana, SD was held Saturday, May 29, 2010 the Zion Lutheran Church in Presho with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain.
John Luurs, 85, was born November 12, 1924 to Dick and Anna Luurs. He attended school in the Platte, SD area. On September 30, 1948 he married Birdena Weekly at Yankton, SD. After his marriage they moved to Presho, SD where he was employed on a ranch. In 1958 the family moved into Presho, SD. He worked at Brown Oil Company filling station. In later years he worked at the Cenex station and helped area farmers with field work. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Presho, SD.
John passed away on May 25, 2010 at Sanford Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain. He is survived by his wife, Birdena; two sons, Raymond (Kristen) of Blaine, MN and Ron (Bonnie) of Pukwana, SD; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry of Yankton, SD and Richard of Grand Rapids, MI; one sister, Grace Donker of Chadron, NE; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald; his parents; brother Harm, and three sisters, Gracie Luurs, Anna Mae Muilenburg and Jennie Muilenburg, and two grandchildren.

Gertrude Jean ‘Gertie’ Larsen, 76, Reliance, passed away Thursday May 13, 2010 at Sanford Mid-Dakota Hospital. She was born Oct. 5, 1933 in Stevenson, SD to Ellridge and Helen (Pressman) Moon. She grew up in Kennebec.
Gertie married Dean Larsen in Chamberlain on May 10, 1952. She lived on their farm south of Reliance until her death.

Hans Rasmussen, 83 Hans Rasmussen, 83, of Presho died Wednesday May 12, 2010 in his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18 at Christ the King Catholic Church, burial followed at Holy Angels Cemetery.
Hans Robert Rasmussen Sr. was born on July 7, 1926, to Henry and Mary (Urban) Rasmussen in Presho. He peacefully passed away on May 12, 2010, at his family home after a long illness.
He attended rural schools in the Lyman County area and continued his education in Pierre High School.
On November 21, 1949, Hans married Betty Thompson at Christ the King Catholic Church, and resided at the family ranch north of Presho. They later moved to town for the children’s schooling, but he continued to travel daily to the ranch and work side by side with his brother. He was fortunate to enjoy the company of his sister at the ranch too after she retired from teaching.
Hans devoted his life to his family, the ranch, and his friends. He was a hard working man, who always found time to be involved in his families’ activities.
Hans loved reading, playing cards, hunting and fishing. He planned and enjoyed those hunting trips to the Black Hills in the Fall with his friends.
He is survived by his children: Marietta (Mike) Lester of Pocatello, ID, Bob Rasmussen of Ft. Pierre, SD, Diann (JR) Grierson of Hysham, MT, Mike Rasmussen of Presho, SD, Rose Rasmussen-DeVries of Gillette, WY, Hank Rasmussen of Presho, SD and Rita Rasmussen of Miles City, MT; his sister Marian Rasmussen of Presho, SD; his brother Fritz (Jean) Rasmussen of Pierre, SD; 12 grandchildren: Justin, Kyle, Kelsey and Shawn Lester,; Josh, Jared, Jamie and Sheena Rasmussen,; Matthew DeVries; Jimmy Grierson; Krista Hart and Dana Leininger; one great-granddaughter Tessa Rasmussen; eight step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Terri was born on Jan. 30, 1949, in Winner, S.D., to Iril Conn Lewis and Angie (Chudomelka) Lewis. She graduated from Presho High School in Presho, SD. Terri married Kurt Anderson on Sept. 8, 1997, at Green Mountain Ranch in Rapid City, SD. She was a member of the National Geographic Society, North Shore Animal Shelter, and National Wildlife Federation.
Terri loved birthdays and made it her mission never to forget those of her friends and family. Her hobbies included bird watching, caring for children and animals, reading and gardening. She passed away March 18, 2010, in Oklahoma City, OK.
She is preceded in death by her father Iril Conn Lewis. Terri is survived by her husband Kurt Anderson, her mother Angie Moorhead; two sons, Paul Graves and Clint Anderson; two daughters, Ashley Graves and Erica Anderson; five grandchildren, David Kayne Graves, Ella Rayne Graves, Meagan Jeanne Bennet, Taylor Ann Hautala, and Isabella Jade Anderson; two brothers, Mark Lewis and Mitch Lewis; two sisters, Connie Foster and Lisa VanTassel.

William Millard, 78
William “Bill” Millard, 78 of Lead, SD passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Mountain Vista Medical Hospital in Meza, AZ. Memorial services for William “Bill” Millard were held Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead.
Bill was born to Archie and Francis (Wescott) Millard in Yankton, SD on November 2, 1931. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Aby) with whom he shared 58 happy years. This union produced six children; William “Gene” Millard and wife Bridgette, Neil Millard and wife Betty; Raymond Millard and friend Roxanne; Sue Bidwell; Lou Ann Brien and husband Leonard and Jeff Millard and friend Patti. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Brothers; Alvin of rural Blunt; Jim of rural Shepherd MT and one sister-in-law Cora Jean Millard of Presho as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Bill received his early education at Springdale Country School and working on the farm, from there he went on to high school in Blunt, SD. After school he worked for the Chicago-Northwestern and continued with family farming. In 1956 he moved his family to Lead to work for Homestake Mining Company for the winter. That winter was very long as he retired from the mine in October of 1991.
Bill was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, Black Hills Rod and Gun Club and he served many years as an officer on the Lead Police Preserve. Bill was an avid hunter of pheasant and deer and enjoyed fishing and camping. His favorite hobby was woodworking, this talent turned into a retirement small business that kept him very busy.
Bill enjoyed being one of the snowbirds in Apache Junction, AZ where he spent days in his engineering chair and evenings playing cards.
Rita Langdeau-Ollerich, 59 Funeral services for Rita D. Langdeau-Ollerich, 59, of Lower Brule, SD were held Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Lower Brule, SD with burial at the Messiah Episcopal Cemetery at Iron Nation, SD.
Rita Diane Langdeau was born January 13, 1951 to Francis Felicia and Velda Langdeau. She attended Lower Brule Elementary and Reliance High School in Reliance. After high school, she started working with the Lower Brule School systems and worked there for over 20 years. On February 16, 1991, Rita married Jeff Ollerich. She later began working for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe until late 2008. Rita enjoyed playing softball and watching football.
Rita passed away on April 5, 2010 at Sanford Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain at the age of 59 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her five children Michelle Langdeau, Lesley Langdeau, Sean Herron, Tyler and Tamara Ollerich; six grandchildren Mary Tess Tsakolos, Araina Jean Wilson, Issac Wilson, Brenan Flute, Percy Pourier, Baptiste Pourier; eight siblings Jackie Jandreau, Robin LaRoche-Middletent, Lana LaRoche, Emma LaRoche, Marilyn LaRoche-Whitney, Harvey LaRoche, Dorcas Bingen, and Tony LaRoche, Jr.; a special aunt Phyllis Crazy Bull; and a special uncle Harvey Langdeau.
Judith England, 60 Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 10 AM at the American Lutheran Church in Presho for Judith England, 60, of Pierre formerly of Presho. Burial will be at the Murdo City Cemetery, Murdo, South Dakota.
Judith died Saturday, April 10 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre.
Judith Marie was born May 14, 1949 to Curt and Ina England in Murdo, SD. When Judy was one year old, she contracted polio and endured many operations on her foot, and suffered from it all her life. Judy attended school at Presho. After graduating, Judy attended Black Hills State College for one year. She returned home to live with her parents.
Judy was always willing to babysit for her nieces, nephews and friends, who all thought she was the best. Judy was baptized and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church. She joined Eastern Star and enjoyed going to all the meetings.
Judy is survived by her mother, Ina; two brothers: Roy (Leah) England and George England; niece, Kayhla; two nephews: Corey and Jon; special extended family: Mary Swedlund and Heather and Sarah Stanley; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Curt; grandparents; special niece, Tracy; and numerous uncles and aunts.

Clifford Clickner, 75 Clifford (Cliff) Carlton Clickner of Brentwood, California, died March 15, 2010 after a short illness. Cliff was one of triplet brothers born to Charlie and Gladys (Dunlap) Clickner on April 7, 1934. He grew up in Vivian, graduating from high school there in 1952.
Even though disabled by arthritis early in his adulthood, nothing seemed to stop his drive. He returned to college and earned a second bachelor’s degree- this one in Biblical Studies at Fresno Pacific College. He used his knowledge and wisdom to minister to many people through organizations such as Tulare Emergency Aid, and later Oak Tree Ministries and The Delta Healing Rooms in Brentwood. He was a member of The Rock Church.
Cliff was the loving husband of Dorothy and father to Terry Clickner, Linda Buettner, and Sandy Alexander. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind four grandchildren and three sisters, Lois Stinson, Milbank, SD, Nadine Howder, Boise, Idaho, and Nona Azizeh, Maple Valley, Washington.
Cliff was a powerful and influential man in his family’s lives and will be deeply missed. Celebration of his life was held March 18th at Brentwood Neighborhood Church.

Philip Dobbin, 19 Philip Dobbin, 19 of Pierre, died on Monday, March 22 in Pierre. Services were on Friday, March 26 at the Murdo Auditorium with burial at the Murdo City Cemetery.
Philip Charles Dobbin was born to Deborah Carroll and Dave Dobbin on October 22, 1990 in Deadwood, SD. He attended school in Jones County and Belle Fourche, SD. He attained his GED in 2009 while living in Deadwood.
Philip worked for Central America Inc. in Lead along with being employed for Larry Shama doing various landscaping and carpentry projects, and most recently Cleary Building Corporation of Pierre, where he was currently living.
Philip enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time outdoors with friends and family fishing, camping, and hunting. Philip was great with kids and enjoyed spending time with his nieces, nephews and young cousins.
Philip is survived by his father, Dave Dobbin of Box Elder, SD and his mother, Deb Carroll of Murdo, SD; his grandmother, Coreen Dobbin of Sioux Falls, and grandparents Willard and Cleota Bryan of Avon, SD; and siblings Jade (Terri Haigler) Frederick, Shawna (Brad) Roghair, Cecily Alexander, Tami Carroll, Dusty Carroll, Gregory Carroll, and Cori Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harold Dobbin, of Reliance.

Catherine Sletto, 91 Catherine (Cathy) Hanson Sletto 91, died January 23, 2010. Memorial Services were March 27, 2010 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pierre with internment at Riverside Cemetery.
Catherine was born February 26, 1918 in Pierre to Don Frank Whitney and Edna Dora Place. She grew up in Pierre and graduated high school in 1936. She married Tom Hanson and they raised 3 sons, Larry, Terry and Roger. Catherine worked for JC Penney and then for SD Livestock Sanitary Board where she retired after 20 years of Service in 1980. Tom died in 1978 and Catherine met and married Orvin Sletto in 1980. From this marriage Catherine gained four more children, Geraldine, Gary, Olin and Kirwin.
Catherine was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and Guild. She also volunteered for Telephone Reassurance.
She and Orvin loved dancing at the VFW, playing cards at the Senior Center, camping with their grandchildren and traveling to almost every state in the US, especially to Oregon.
Christmas was a special time and her house on South Harrison was always decorated inside and covered with lights outside. She would spend her time baking and packaging her Christmas cookies to be sent to all the kids and grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting. Catherine dearly loved her grandchildren and faithfully attended their activities.
Catherine is survived by her sister Helen Dobier of Sioux Falls, children Terry (Linda) Hanson, Oregon, Roger (Vicki) Hanson, Pierre, Geraldine (Larry) Cass, Pierre, Gary (LaDell) Sletto, Draper, Olin (Connie) Sletto, Ill., Kerwin (Wendy) Sletto, ND.

Eileen Lois Gilman Johnson, 95 Eileen Lois Gilman Johnson died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, January 30, 2010. Eileen and twin sister, Ellen, were born May 26, 1914, to William (Billy) and Amanda Gilman on a ranch north of Kennebec. Eileen and Ellen attended schools there and graduated from Kennebec High School in 1932. Eileen attended Eastern State College, Madison, S.D., returning to Kennebec to work in the Lyman County Courthouse. In 1936, she and her sister moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Eileen worked for Travelers Insurance. There she met her future husband, Wallace A. Johnson, whom she married in 1939. In 1947, he was transferred to the Travelers Insurance Office, Portland, Oregon. He and Eileen spent most of their 67 years together in Portland, where both were active in the community and in the activities of their two children. Along with helping out at Alameda Grade School, Eileen was a leader of a Camp Fire Girls group and a den mother of Cub Scouts.
She was an avid bridge player and golfer (scoring two holes-in-one). After Wallace retired, they enjoyed some overseas travel, longer visits with relatives in Omaha, Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana and wintering in Palm Springs.
Survivors include her two children: Waleen (Bill) Babcock, Missoula, Montana and Gilman Johnson, Portland, Oregon, and five grandchildren. A private celebration of her life will take place in April upon the birth of her first great grandchild.
Preceding her in death were her husband Wallace; brother Arthur Gilman; and her twin sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Forest Davidson.

Vera “Jan” Janese DeGeest, 72 Vera “Jan” Janese DeGeest was born on July 2, 1937, in Pierre, SD to Leon and Vera (Boal) Jackson.
She attended grades K-12 in Presho and graduated in 1955. Jan attended nursing school at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, SD and graduated with an RN degree in 1958. She worked at the Chamberlain Hospital after graduation.
She was united in marriage on June 19, 1959, to Roy DeGeest and they moved to Canistota where Jan worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home from 1959 until 1982. After having back surgery, Jan opened a daycare in her home where she took care of many children and loved each one of them as her own.
After Roy passed away on June 10, 1984 and her son, Ron, graduated from high school in May, 1986, Jan moved to Plankinton, SD to be closer to family. Jan worked at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD from 1986 until she retired in 2003. Later in October of 2003 she was diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer. Jan lived at home until she moved to Bormann Manor in Parkston in November, 2009.
She was a member of the Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Ron and wife, Donna; three granddaughters, Shauna, Kendra and Maci Jo all of Dimock, SD; one brother, Larry Jacskon and wife, Sue, Gillette, WY; three sisters-in-laws, Connie Jackson, Lexington, NE; Ruth Taylor and Mary Califf, Armour, SD; two brothers-in-law, Vern DeGeest, Corsica, SD and Dennis DeGeest and wife, Kitti, Plankinton; nine nieces, seven nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, Gary Jackson; a sister-in-law, Ardis Degeest and two brothers-in-law, Bud Taylor and Dale DeGeest.

Alfred A. Mueller, 90 Funeral services for Alfred A. Mueller, 90, of Oacoma, SD were Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain.
Alfred Albrecht Mueller, the older of two children of Albert and Dena (Blum) Mueller was born May 27, 1919 in Mitchell, South Dakota and raised in Oacoma, where he graduated high school in 1937. Al attended the University of South Dakota for two years, and joined the United States Army-Air Force in 1942. He was stationed in Italy at the time that WWII ended, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On September 25, 1946, Al was united in marriage to Veda L. Sloat at Gettysburg.
Al and Veda founded their family business Al’s Oasis in 1952, and under their astute business acumen grew a small rural business into a well known and successful South Dakota business.
Al served on numerous boards and state organizations. Al was awarded the Ben Black Elk Award by Governor George Mickelson in 1991, and received many other honors over the years including Spirit of Affiliated Award 1994 and University of SD Businessman of the Year Award 1986. An early and active member of the Black Hills Bad Lands Association, Al served for many years on its Board of Directors. Al also served as a board of director of South Dakota AAA. Al proudly belonged to the Kennebec-Reliance Johnson Peterson American Legion Post No. 179.
Al passed away on March 11, 2010 at his residence after a long and productive life. He is survived by his four children, DeEtte Geddes and husband Ed of Oacoma, Paul Mueller and wife Mary Pat of Oacoma, Steve Mueller and wife Jeanne of Oacoma, and Mark Mueller and wife Ann of Oacoma; his sister Alice Eads of Sioux Falls, 14 grandchildren, Trisha Burke and husband Brian of Chamberlain, Trent Geddes and wife Emilee of Sioux Falls, Abby Gramlick-Mueller and husband Mike Gramlick of Canton, Megan Mueller and husband Brent Schmeichel of Hartford, Ashley Burt and husband Nathan of Minneapolis, MN, Matt Mueller of Mitchell, Katie Mueller of Lincoln, NE and Eric Mueller of Oacoma, Chelsea Mueller of Sioux Falls, Jordin Mueller of Sioux Falls, Trevor Hanig, Courtney Mueller, Addy Hanig, and Cooper Mueller all of Oacoma and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as a whole community of employees, former employees, friends, relatives and business associates.
Preceding him in death was his mother Dena in 1961, his father Albert in 1974, and his beloved wife Veda on August 15, 2000, a grandson Anthony Mueller in 1984, and a great granddaughter Gabriella Schmeichel in 2003.

Beverly Jean Hadley, 69 Beverly Jean Hadley, 69, of Hermosa, died on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Memorial services are set for 10:00 am Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with TREA Chaplain David Summarell officiating. Inurnment at Black Hills National Cemetery will take place at a later time.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph L. Hadley of Hermosa; three sons, Kevin Ellis of Altona, Penn., William (Billy) McDonald and Owen McDonald, both of Florida; her daughter, Lisa McDonald of Florida; her grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Hansen of Reliance and John Hansen of Rapid City; her sister, Deb Thacker of Rapid City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
John E Christensen, 86 Funeral services for John E. Christensen, 86, of Oacoma, SD will be Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Oacoma, SD. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 10 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.
John E. Christensen was born April 1, 1923 at Parker, SD to Andrew and Edith (Lakings) Christensen. He attended grade school through the tenth grade at Prairie Star Country School northeast of Reliance and graduated from Oacoma High School in 1941. After high school, he returned to farming with his father until enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps on April 21, 1945. After his discharge on May 19, 1946, he returned home to continue farming with his father on the family farm.
John met Ruth Norman in June of 1946 and on October 26, 1946, they were united in marriage. To this union, four daughters were born: Edith, Ethel, Karen, and Chris. John and Ruth farmed and raised Simmental cattle, sheep, and pigs until semi-retiring and moving to Oacoma in 1997 when his grandson began taking over the family farm operations.
John was a member of the American Legion Johnson-Peterson Post No. 179 of Reliance for 59 years and since 1961 was a member of the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain. He was a member of the Simmental Association, Stockgrower’s Association, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Fairland Township Board, and Lindley School Board.
John received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1957.
John passed away on March 5, 2010 as a result of a vehicle accident near Pukwana, SD at the age of 86 years.
Gratefully sharing in his life are his four daughters Edith Christensen and close friend Wally Jacobson of Howard, SD, Ethel Johnson of Norwood, MN, Karen Kraus and husband Don of Custer, SD, and Chris Laughlin and husband Rick of Brandon, SD; 10 grandchildren: Mike and Greg Schuchardt, Ryan, Jon, and Heather Johnson, Brian, Lori, and Jeff Kraus, Rochelle Lund and husband Dean, and Mallory Laughlin; two great grandchildren Spencer and Kylie; a step great grandchild Kryssa; and a sister Donna Bauer of Mitchell, SD. Preceding him in death were his mother in 1947, his father in 1954, and his wife Ruth on February 24, 2009, and a sister Dorothy Cadwell.

Gary Jackson, 65 Gary Jackson, 65, of Lexington, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington, NE.
Funeral services for Gary Jackson were held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Lexington Christian Church in Lexington with Pastor Kyron C. BeDunnah officiating.
He was born April 3, 1944, at Pierre, S.D., to Leon and Vera (Boal) Jackson. Gary attended school in Presho, S.D., graduating high school with the class of 1962. He then went on to college at Dakota Weslyan College at Mitchell, S.D., where he obtained his BA in education.
His first teaching job was at Lake Andes, S.D., where he taught science. It was during his four-year tenure at Lake Andes that he obtained his masters in education administration from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
He met the love of his life, Connie Sip, during his first teaching job. He taught with Connie’s mother and this was where it all began. The couple was married Aug.15, 1970, at Lake Andes. Following their marriage the couple moved to Superior where they both taught for two years and the second year Gary was assistant principal.
In 1972, they moved to Merna, Nebraska where Gary was principal at Anselmo-Merna until 1976, when he changed professions and started working at Farm Bureau Insurance in Broken Bow. In 1979, they moved to Ogallala where he was division manager for Farm Bureau Insurance until moving to Lexington in 1983, where he was agency manager and then career agent until retiring in June of 2009.
Gary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and then the Lexington Christian Church where he also served as Elder. He was a member of the Waterfowlers, Life Underwriters and the Lexington Community Choir. Gary also enjoyed attending the early morning Men’s Bible Study.
He had a passion for hunting, and kept meticulous records for precision reloading of ammunition and marksmanship. He enjoyed reading, gardening and visiting with folks from all walks of life. He shared his faith with his loving Christian family and adored his granddaughters. He loved to take his kids and grandkids prairie dog hunting when all had the time. Gary will be so very missed.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Jackson of Lexington; one son, Nathan Jackson of Kearney; one daughter, Wendy (Aaron) Widger of Shenandoah, Iowa; one brother, Larry (Sue) Jackson of Gillette, Wyo.; one sister, Jan DeGeest of Plankinton, S.D.., and three granddaughters, Tristin, Amy and Kaitlyn Widger of Shenandoah, Iowa.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Roy DeGeest.

John Houchin, 96 Funeral services for John Houchin, 96 of Kennebec will be Wednesday, March 10 at 11 am in the Kennebec Methodist Church. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Kennebec. John died on Sunday, March 7 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre.
John was born on April 26, 1913 at Oldham, SD to Will and Hazel (Coulter) Houchin. The family moved to Lyman County when John was four years old.
He attended grade school at West Dorman County School and attended Kennebec High School. As a young man he traveled to Oregon with friends looking for work in the ‘30’s. He lived there for two years before returning to South Dakota and working for area farmers and ranchers.
On April 20, 1938 he married Marie Schoenfelder at Presho, SD and they moved to a farm north of Kennebec. In 1953, they bought the home place, where they continued to live until moving into Kennebec in 1980. He especially enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and farming the land. Upon his retirement John enjoyed fishing and watching the Atlanta Braves. On April 20, 2009 they celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary.
John worked at the Presho Sale Barn part-time for many years. He was a member of SD Stockgrowers, Kennebec Town and Country Club, and served as township assessor for numerous years.
He is survived by his wife Marie; son Willis (Joyce) Houchin; daughter Judy (David) Mertens; brother Laurel (Gerry) Houchin all of Kennebec; sister-in-law Katie Steckelburg of Sturgis; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews and a special nephew Dale (Sharon) Houchin of Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Alyce Faye Kotz and son-in-law Paul Kotz; two brothers Fred and Dick and one sister Alice Robinson.

Lorraine Flaws, 82 Funeral services for Lorraine Isburg Flaws, 82, of Chamberlain, SD will be Thurs., Feb. 25, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain at 12 PM with viewing beginning at 11 AM. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery. A Memorial Service and dinner will be held at 2 PM at the Oacoma Community Center to celebrate her life.
Lorraine Isburg Flaws died February 18, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD after a short illness.
Lorraine Isburg Flaws was born on August 27, 1927 to Thure F. and Amelia (Carpenter) Isburg at their home on Brule Bottom, north of Chamberlain, SD. She was an enrolled member of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and very proud of this fact.
She attended country school and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1945. She attended college at Nettleton College and Augustana in Sioux Falls, SD.
She married Arleigh Stokes in 1947. Their daughter, Carman, was born in 1948 at Sioux Falls, SD. Lorraine worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for a few years then in 1952 for the Alewel’s as office manager for the Chamberlain Register. Lorraine and her daughter moved to Las Vegas in 1953. She worked as a bookkeeper, was an instructor at the Las Vegas Business School, and property manager.
Lorraine married Eugene Flaws in 1974 in Tonapah, NV. They returned to Chamberlain, SD in 1976 and Lorraine started the Lorraine Isburg Flaws Enterprises (LIFE) Roofing and Construction business. She received many government contracts for remodeling of buildings in SD and ND. They did a lot of work at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City.
After her daughter was killed in an auto accident in March 1986 she lost interest and closed her business in Dec. 1988. In 1993 she became the Gaming Commissioner and General Manager of the LodeStar Casino in Ft. Thompson for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. She worked for the Tribe from 1993 to 1996. After Eugene died in Oct. 1996 after a long battle with cancer she decided to retire.
Grateful for having shared her life are her cousins, Dr. Carroll Isburg of Yankton, SD; Darryl Lee Isburg, Pierre, SD; Dean Isburg, Volin, SD; and Leland Isburg, Chamberlain, SD. Children of her brother, Donald Isburg, Audrey Isburg Courser, Vancouver, WA; and Clinton Dale Isburg, Amboy, WA and their children. Also numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and special friends: Donna Kentch; Polly Prchal, Carol Hutmacher of Oacoma, SD, Shirley Goldammer, Chamberlain, SD, JoAnne Mann of Newtown, ND, and Carole Seeking Land of Ft. Thompson, SD.
