Firemens’ bed races and a kids’ pedal tractor pull were just two of the new events added to the Vivian Community Club’s annual 4th of July celebration in 2009.
Diana Booth, Community Club president and her committee of Eunice Hullinger and Ryan Lambley put together a day of activities and events to please people of all ages.
Over forty parade entries traveled down Main Street. Punk Strom’s historic replicas of Vivian buildings won first place, followed by the Dakota Prairie Bank and the Authier family float.
Several different games were available for kids in the afternoon including the pedal tractor pull. C&D Pedal Pull of Burke held the sanctioned pull. Area youth qualified for the State Pedal Pull to be held later this summer. The womens’ powder puff was won by Teresa Brandenburg.
Firemen from Vivian, Presho, Draper, Kennebec and Williams Creek Township participated in the bed races down Vivian’s Main Street. The five member teams featured four pushing and one on the bed changing into a nightgown while being pushed. The first team across the finish line won.
William Creek team consisting of Travis Henricksen, Barry Valburg, Loren Booth, and Clint, Karsten, and Chris Erikson won the traveling firemens trophy.
The Vivian Community production of Hee Haw, directed by Deb Smith, Tom Auither and Beth Erikson, featured singing, dancing and plenty of corny jokes from a variety of locals.
DJ Andrew Bork of Murdo entertained the crowd on Main Street from 9 PM to 1 AM.
