Dear Mr. Carrier,
I am writing to tell you what many of the Howard fans thought of the atmosphere at the Howard-Lyman game last Friday night. Recently we received a letter at Sanborn Central school from a Wagner fan about our team and I would just like to “pay it forward” a little.
First of all, being from “east” river, we didn’t know what to expect. Would we be out in the middle of nowhere, will there be trees for a windbreak, any decent facilities? Will these big guys be cocky or mean? How will the referees treat us? All the usual things one thinks about before an important game, and before going somewhere you haven’t been before.
We were in for a big surprise, everything about the game (other than losing) was wonderful. From the friendly and funny people at the gates, to the beautiful field and track you have, to the nice grandstand and facilities, from restrooms to concessions. It was all very welcoming.
The beautiful scenery around the grandstand, the LHS on the hill to the west was awesome, and having the flags around the field and nice track, to the great singers that sang the Star Spangled Banner and the color guard. It was all very well done and in such good taste.
We also appreciated that the referees seemed fair and, even though I don’t think they can ever be perfect, there weren’t a lot of one-sided calls either way.
The most impressive thing was the sportsmanship. Your young men were helpful on the field to our guys when one was down and there seemed to be a good “rivalry” on the field. But the nicest thing about the night was the announcer. He was very good, articulate, and loud enough to hear. He was appreciative of our boys when they did a good job. He didn’t brag about the win and realized it was a hard fought game. The Lyman boys did a good job and deserved to win, and we wish them all the luck in their future games. They deserve to be rated #1 now, and probably should have been since the pre-season polls. The announcer wished Howard well in our next game and also wished us all a safe trip home.
It was such a nice evening and for it to be such a display of pride in our respective teams and to have the respect of the fans and players just made it a very nice experience. I just wanted to thank your school and the people that help put on an event like this. I know it takes a lot of volunteers to get a game going and we appreciated all the nice comments and tremendous job that everyone did.
Good luck in the future and keep the sportsmanship going, your boys will represent your school well.
