W. J. “Bud” Smith, 98

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, Pierre,  for W. J. “Bud” Smith who died on Monday, October 12, 2009 at a Ocean Springs, Mississippi Hospital.

Longtime resident of Lyman County and Pierre, W. J. “Bud” Smith, died of natural causes on October 12, 2009.

He was born November 5, 1910, one of twin boys born to Ella (Rasmussen) and John Smith, on their homestead, Cedar Creek, Lyman County, South Dakota.    The twin boys were named Wilbur John (Bud) and William John (Bill).   They were later joined by a third son, Truman Kenneth (True).  A while after True’s birth, Ella, worried about raising young toddlers in rattlesnake territory, and John, concerned about the drought, returned to John’s parental home near Climbing Hill, Iowa.  After a decade farming in Iowa, the family returned  to their home in South Dakota.

Continuing his primary education in rural schools, Bud completed his secondary education graduating from Pierre High School (working for room and board).  Eager to improve his stead and “see the world”, Bud joined the United States Navy on October 18, 1934, graduating from the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego.  He served on the USS Oklahoma and visited numerous international ports of call.

Encouraged to continue his naval career with the offer of significant advancement, Bud declined this opportunity as his family pressed him to return to help his parents at the family farm.  He had saved most every dollar of his Navy pay and returned home to set himself and his brothers up in ranching and farming ventures and urged his parents to never work another day.

Bud and Betty Jean Smith eloped and were married in Butte, Nebraska, on February 7, 1942.   Bud shared fifty-six years of marriage with his beloved “Jetty Bean” until her death from a massive stroke in 1998.  Six children were born to this unselfish, diligent, energetic couple:  Kenneth Lee, Richard John, Terrance Herbert, Connie Kay, W. E. “Buddy” , and Kathleen Jean.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife Betty, son Richard, grandson Mathew, and brothers Bill and True.  He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Vicki Smith, Minneapolis, Minnesota; son Dr. Terrance Smith, Clear Lake; daughter and son-in-law Connie and Dr. Richard Bowen, Boise, Idaho; son and daughter-in-law Bud and Nancy Smith, Ocean Springs, Mississippi; daughter Dr. Kathleen Smith, Kearney, Nebraska; and daughter-in-law Marklynn Smith, Fairmont, Minnesota.  Grandchildren:  US Navy Lieutenant James, Robert, Dr. Elizabeth, Christopher, Dr. David (Lynda), Thomas (Kim), and Catherine (John Brazell) Bowen; Daniel, Bethany (James Butler), Brittany, Marianne, and Emily Smith; Jacquelynn Smith and Todd (Mindy) Booth; Ashley, Bradley, Shannon and Samantha Smith; thirteen great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
