George Quillin, 85

Funeral services for George Quillin, 85, of Kennebec, SD were held  Friday, December 11, 2009  at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kennebec with burial in the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Kennebec.

George Francis Quillin was born on March 14, 1924 to Joe and Leota (Gunn) Quillin on a farm north of Kennebec.  He attended North Dorman School and Kennebec High School graduating in 1941.  After attending a Welding School in Aberdeen for six months, he worked at Mertens Service Station in Kennebec.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943.  He served on board the DE528 on convoy duty in the Atlantic to England.  He served as Shore Patrol in England from 1945 until he was Honorably Discharged in early 1947.  He returned to the U.S. on a German Destroyer manned by U.S. Sailors and Volunteer German Seamen.  He received the Military Service Award.  Upon his return to Kennebec he began farming with his brother John.  They were in partnership farming until John’s death in 2007.  George continued to live in their newly built home in Kennebec until his health began to fail in 2008.  He went to live in the Heiman Boarding Home in Presho and later moved to Sanford Mid Dakota Care Center in Chamberlain in February 2009.

George and John received many awards on their farming practices.  They were known to be good farmers and good supporters of the community and their home town of Kennebec.  George was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 179 where he served as Commander for several years.  He was a go-getter for American Legion Membership for 65 years receiving recognition for this in November of 2009.  He was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kennebec, lifetime member of the V.F.W., lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and a lifelong member of the Farmer’s Union.

George passed away at the age of 85 years on December 8, 2009 at Sanford Mid Dakota Care Center in Chamberlain where he had lived since February receiving the best of care and enjoying his nurses.  Gratefully sharing in his life are his two sisters Donna Peterson of Reliance and Della Studt and husband John of Presho; 11 nieces and nephews; and many grand nieces and nephews who all shared in his life; a step-brother Paul Cooney of Mitchell, SD and family friend Phillip Caslin of Tea, SD.   Preceding him in death were his parents Joe and Leota Quillin, step-mother Rose Cooney Quillin, brother John Quillin, brother-in-law Verle Peterson, a great nephew Jeff Studt and a baby great niece J. Studt.

Memorials may be directed to the new Sanford Mid Dakota Care Center for dining hall furnishings.
