Vaneta Schelske, 89
Funeral services for Vaneta Schelske were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Brian Downs and Rev. Daryl Tompkins officiating. Burial was in the Reliance Cemetery. Vaneta passed away On Feb. 4, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls at the age of 89 years, 5 moths and 8 days.
Vaneta Elizabeth Tracy was born August 28, 1914 at Presho, SD, the daughter of John (Jack) & Ella (Gossman) Tracy.
She graduated from Presho High School in 1932 & continued her education at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. She returned to SD to enter her teaching career.
Starting at Norris, SD, Vaneta continued teaching in several communities including Reliance, Ft. Thompson & Lower Brule.
While teaching in a rural school near Reliance, she met the love of her life, Elmer Schelske & they were united in marriage on Nov. 16, 1940 in Gordon, NE. After their marriage they resided south of Kennebec, SD for one year before purchasing their farm south of Reliance.
In 1953, Vaneta returned to the classroom & taught for many more years. In 1954, Elmer & Vaneta purchased their home in Reliance & resided there until June 2001 when they moved to the Regency Retirement Assisted Living in Chamberlain, SD.
Vaneta & Elmer loved to dance & could be found dancing in several communities in SD. If there wasn't a dance in the area they could be found playing cards with their friends, especially Orvin & Martha Kindopp. They loved to travel & had visited 48 states, but still found SD to be their favorite.
Vaneta enjoyed reading, crocheting, working crossword puzzles & spending time with her grandchildren. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband (Elmer ) of 63 years, one son, Harlan (Sonia), Reliance, SD; three daughters; Myrna (Billy) Hale, Plattsmouth, NE, Lorna (Jerry) Kistler, Chamberlain, SD; & Judy (the late Doug) Brewster, Sioux Falls, SD, 11 grandchildren & 9 great-grandchildren.
Vaneta was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers Beryl & Don Tracy & 2 sisters, Helen McManigal & Louise Henke.
