Martha Leichtnam, 90



Martha Leichtnam, 90, of Presho died Thursday, March 18 at New Life Boarding Home in Presho.

Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday, March 21st at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 22nd at the Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Angels Cemetery in Presho.

Martha Leichtnam was born February 1, 1914 to Henry and Johanna (Seehausen) Ehlers at their homestead north of Presho.

Martha married Emanuel Leichtman on Sept. 16, 1935. To this union seven children were born - MaDonna, John (Jack), Mary, Charlotte, Charlene, Dorothy (Tootie) and Deanna. They also had 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Martha grew up on a farm with eight other siblings, attended Brule country school, graduated from Presho High School in 1933, attended Notre Dame College in Mitchell and received a teachers certificate. She taught country school for two years, got married, and became a homemaker.

She and her husband made their home north of Presho. After retirement in 1970, they moved into Presho. Marthas husband Emanuel passed away May 16, 1983. On June 7, 1997 she moved into New Life Boarding Home where she received excellent care.

She belonged to Christ the King Catholic Church, Altar Society, Extension Club, Senior Citizens, and two Card clubs.

Martha was well known for her homemade bread. She loved playing cards, bingo, and doing word puzzles. She enjoyed needlework and making all kinds of crafts, especially her bread dough roses. She was a very good cook and sewed for her family.

Martha so enjoyed celebrating her 90th Birthday on February 1, 2004 with family and friends.

She is survived by five daughters: Mary Whipple, Oacoma; Charlotte (Bob) Mortenson, Presho; Charlene (Gary) Nies, Martin; Tootie (Earl) Bailey, Presho; Deanna (Herb) Sundall, Kennebec; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Boss, Chamberlain, and Rosa Lamb, Presho.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, a son, two granddaughters, three sisters and three brothers.
