Sclerotinia concerns in Sunflower

The wet growing season of 2019 resulted in some serious disease issues in sunflowers in some areas of South Dakota. Diseases caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, include Sclerotinia wilt/basal stalk rot; mid-stem rot; and head rot. This fungus is already known to cause “white mold” in many crops such as soybean, dry edible beans, canola, and broad-leaf weeds.

LEGION NEWS Kennebec-Reliance American Legion Happenings Welcome to August 2020, where has this messed up year gone? The whole year seems like a blur and not much happening except virus and politics and neither are very good. The next meeting will be 13 August 2020 at the Legion Hall in Reliance, SD starting at 7:00 PM.

Thrift Store offers school supplies The Presho Thrift Store & More has a large selection of school supplies and back packs for school age children kindergarten through grade 12. Supply lists from area schools are on hand at the store.

Book sale held at Presho Library

The Presho City Library held a book sale on Friday, August 7 after clearing all the shelves in the library getting ready for the construction of the new addition and remodeling of the present library. Tables of books for all ages were available to look through and take home. Betsy Brodrecht, left and Melissa Slaba look through stacks of on the tables. Books, DVD’s, and the Wilton cake pans were donated to the Thrift Store.

Long-time librarian and advocate for learning retires after many years of service to community

A three-hour shift on July 31, 2020, marked the end of LaVerne Olson’s 24 years as Librarian of Presho Public Library. That achievement becomes more impressive when it is placed into the context that this stretch followed a 46-year span as an educator and Librarian at Presho/Lyman Schools. Olson consistently dedicated herself to maximizing available resources while seeking to implement technology for use in the library and by its patrons.

Outdoor book barn added to Kennebec Main Street

The Kennebec Public Library is excited to introduce the Book Barn. It is a little free library located in front of the library building. “It doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the whole city,” says Renae Wagner, one to two newly appointed librarians. “It’s our hope that the Book Barn will bring a little more joy, a little more connections and a lot more books into the hands of our community.”
