Frank A. Unger, 93, of Tallahassee, FL, passed away, fulfilling the Lord’s purpose for him on Saturday, December 30, 2023, after a long and eventful life. He joins his beloved wife of 55 years, Agnes, and was interred with her in the Presho Cemetery, Lyman County, SD.

He was born October 13, 1930, in Pointville, NJ, shortly after the start of the Great Depression, to his parents, Michael Bertalan Unger and Jennie Frances (Hansen) Unger, and he joined five siblings and the family shortly moved to New York City where two more brothers were added. The family lived in several areas of the City and when his father died just as WW II ended in Europe he left school in tenth grade to work in support of his family. He enlisted in the newly established United States Air Force

at 17 where he proudly served his country as an Airman and Commissioned Officer for the next 21 years. During his service in South Dakota, he met a young women on a blind date, Agnes Marie Studt, the only love of his life, the two married October 27, 1951.

They raised two daughters, Monica Annette and Nancy Marie. During this time he worked to achieve his initial academic goal and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at Florida State University in 1962.

Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1968 he and his family came to Tallahassee where he planned to advance his formal education and seek a career in academia. He limited his efforts with his Master’s Degree when an opportunity came when he joined in the establishment of the Florida Resources Analysis Center (FRAC) at FSU, (later FREAC), where he was able to apply his research knowledge of Florida’s State land records to resolve a practical problem. His efforts resulted in the preparation and publication of the first computerized listing of documented State-owned lands under the jurisdiction of the State Dept. of Natural Resources. As Director of FREAC and as an FSU Faculty Member he was involved in numerous projects with many State public agencies during his time at FSU. He and his wife retired from the University in 1993. He enjoyed many retired years traveling with his wife, stamp collecting, woodworking and reading.

Frank was a member of the University Lutheran Church in Tallahassee, Florida. Frank is survived by his daughter Monica; children Francesca and Maximilian and daughter Nancy Cenedella (Paul) and children Michael and Gabriel. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Agnes Marie; his siblings and their spouses; Edward (Joan); Maybelle (John); Jeanette (Bill); Richard; Michael (Doris); Mathew (Jeanine); and Robert (Kathy).

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to University Lutheran Church (Tallahassee, FL) or the American Cancer Society.
