Harlan Brandsrud, 80, Estelline, SD and most recently of Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Presho, SD. Services were held Friday, September 18, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Estelline, led by Pastor Beverly Struckmann.

Burial, with military graveside rites by the Montgomery-Anderson American Legion Post #0184, Estelline, SD was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Estelline

Harlan Eugene Brandsrud, son of Pearl (Biwer) and Alfred Brandsrud, was born June 1, 1940 at Estelline. He was brought up on the family farm four miles NE of Estelline. His formal education consisted of Grange #27 Rural School and Estelline High School, Class of 1958. He then worked various construction jobs in California and Rapid City, SD. Harlan served his country in the United States Army, being inducted February 18, 1960. He was honorably discharge on February 4, 1963. Harlan married Diane Bruinsma at Estelline on November 26, 1965. The couple settled in Estelline and Harlan continued working in construction. He also ran Vi’s Corner in Estelline for a few years. In 1968, Harlan and Diane built the Red Carpet Lounge in Estelline which they operated until selling the business in August 1973. They then relocated to a farm SW of Estelline. Later on, Harlan got into custom combining and he and his son, Gene, would start in Oklahoma and work their way back to South Dakota. In 1994, Harlan moved to Sioux Falls where he lived the rest of his life. He then spent quite a few years driving truck. Although eventually retiring, Harlan still enjoyed his annual harvesting trip to Lyman County. In addition to combining, Harlan also loved fishing.

Harlan is survived by five sons—Dale (Lori) of Scottsdale, AZ, Gene (Cristy Anderson) of Sioux Falls, Chad of Somerset, SD, Boyd (Theresa) of Brandon, SD, and Ross (Rosie) of Estelline; one daughter, Gale (Scott) Lien of Bowdle; 11 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; and his nephew, Wade Brandsrud of Estelline.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred, on March 11, 1985; his mother, Pearl, on November 25, 1997; and his brother and sisterin-law, Bertil & Cindy.
