10 years of Little Pasture on the Prairie

Little Pasture on the Prairie Last week, I turned in the manuscript for my next book. It will be a compilation of columns spanning the decade I’ve spent writing these weekly missives to you all.

The Four Horsemen: A Conservative Supreme Court Bloc with outsized influence that resonates in our time

Body
The Four Horsemen of Supreme Court— not Biblical—lore represented one of the most important blocs of Justices in the history of our constitutional tradition. Their intractable opposition to New Deal legislation and reforms in the 1930s, in favor of an old-style conservatism that embraced laissez-faire economics and the view that the Constitution was an unchanging document in a universe governed by fixed and inexorable laws, marked the Four Horsemen, as contemporary newspapers characterized them, as the most polarizing judicial alliance in the Court’s history.

The Nagging Cough

Body
“I’ve got this cough that just won’t go away,” my patient says, and I know this story all too well. Chronic cough, a cough that lasts more than two months, is a common ailment which in most cases is benign.

Momma and the irrationality of politics

Body
“If you do not vote, you are not a real American,” so said momma after I turned 18. So down the trail I went to vote in 1960 at the little Walker country schoolhouse just as momma told me. I voted for the president she said was the best…and who wants to challenge momma? That would be un-American! Going against her dictum would be worse than swearing like a sailor at a sacred convocation in the cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Lessons in Leadership from our greatest Presidents

Body
South Dakota is second to none when it comes to celebrating America’s presidents. The iconic Mount Rushmore memorializes four of them in larger-than-life granite. As many times as I’ve seen it, Mount Rushmore never gets old, and it still inspires me, as I’m sure it inspires the millions of visitors who come to the Black Hills to see the monument each year. Down the road in Rapid City, statues of our presidents line the streets of downtown. So when Presidents Day comes around each year, South Dakotans know the people who have held that office.

Spending time with my children inspired my writing

Body
My kids are used to seeing me tapping away at my computer keyboard. When they were tiny it didn’t mean much to them, but now they understand that writing is my job, and when I am on the computer, I am often working on a column. It was an amazing shift when recently the sight of me typing caused them to stop mid-shout (“Maaaa–!”), turn, and go ask their Dad for help instead.
